Week Fourteen: Response 14.4

In the chapter “Guilty Pleasures,” how does Katz scrutinize guilty pleasures for men as contributing to rape culture, from video games like Grand Theft Auto to violent pornography to strip clubs?

  1. In the chapter, “Guilty Pleasures”, Katz starts off by saying how men and women often avoid questioning their guilty pleasures or wanting to thing about how it connects with rape culture. He said that he “denied any connection between my private pleasure and the perpetuation of rape culture,” and how he did not want to know about how the women were to be treated in the sex industry (183). He suggests for people who wish to fight gender violence, should be honest about their self-doubts and do their best to prevent it in anyway. It is said that pornography contributes to the issue of sex violence and it desensitizes men by the violence being done to women (185). In magazines and videos, it is shown to “limit women’s sexual freedom,” while making women the victims by men (186). The industry socialized “normal” boys to be sexuality dominant and for them to “objectify and dehumanize” “normal” girls (188). One thing that promotes women being humiliated and male sexual aggression is ok, is in the video game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. In the game, players have the option to “stimulate sex with a prostitute” and then choose to kill her (205). There are also videos of “violent and degrading” scenes of women being picked up and asked to do something sexual on camera for money. She is then forced to do multiple things with the man and when he is all finished with her, he tries to find a way to dump her on the side of the road, leaving her humiliated (187). In strip clubs, women are literally stripped down to absolute nothing, and having to do whatever the man paid for, making him entitled. If the women do not do what the man wanted, the man will get angry because he didn’t get what he paid for (201). The violence can be stopped if it weren’t so mainstream and if the men realize how bad the situation is for women.

  2. In porn, men’s aggressiveness from their contempt of women is normalized. Men’s dominance, power, and sexual pleasure-taking as well as women’s vulnerability, submission, and degradation is normalized and taught to be arousing. Young boys and girls who are exposed to porn learn that this is how people have sex instead of consensual and mutually respectful sex. When boys and men experience sexual pleasure from this treatment of women, they cannot unsee and unlearn what this has taught them, as even Katz himself recalls in his earlier life.

While Katz presents both anti-porn and pro-porn arguments, he questions the effects porn has on men. Porn, violence, and even strip clubs reduce women to sexual objects for sale. When men purchase either porn videos, entrance to a strip club, or a lap dance, men take on a sense of ownership over women and their bodies. Katz points out that male customers feel like they can treat women in the industry however they want and this often times leads to rape and violence. He provided the tragic story of Kristen Crowley, a prostitute murdered by two men who had visited a strip club earlier that day.

Grand Theft Auto, especially the latest version to hit the market, includes options for players to engage in sexual acts with prostitutes and “in true GTA style,” brutally murder her afterwards. We watched a horrifying clip in class showing just that! Katz argues that this may not be inspiring boys and men to literally do this, but instead it very dangerously desensitizes normal boys and men to this kind of violence against women. To play this day after day as a “game” makes the sight of it so normal.

Porn, strip clubs, and GTA sexualize and normalize violence against women, which contributes immensely to rape culture. Men’s attitudes towards women have been deeply affected for years and so, too, women have been deeply affected by the manifestations of these attitudes. It is so prevalent and mainstream that it is now a part of our culture.

  3. In the chapter “Guilty Pleasure,” Katz states that men get pleasure from violence and aggressive porn. Men love to watch porn where women are sexually objectified and beat down for their pleasure. Porn websites have a specific category where men can choose to watch aggressive sex. Men choose to watch aggressive porn because they have the power and control over a woman to do anything for their pleasure. The women is the submissive and the men take the lead. This type of porn exposes women to be vulnerable and weak. Men beat, expose rape, and mistreat women by calling them bitches. The type of porn men are into produces violence and hate towards women. Women have to let themselves get spit on, spank on, and be treated like a toy for men’s pleasure. Men do not care about a woman’s feeling but their sexual arousal. Men who watch this type of porn are supporting rape culture and also physical abuse towards women. Katz explain that when he was small, he was exposed to violence in porn and thought sex had to be rough. Katz states that sex shouldn’t be violent but gentle that will bring pleasure to both partners and not for entertainment.
Katz also talks about the violence in video games that men are entertained by. For example Grand Theft Auto is a video game that promotes violence, sex, rape, and drugs. Men and also young boys love to play GTA 5. This video game lets the players to go into strip clubs and see topless women dancing. Also it has a section where they can get a private room and get a lap dance showing boobs. You are able to touch and throw money at her. While you do that to her, she ends up liking you and you can take her home to have sex with her. Not only it shows women naked but also there are missions where you have to murder women. GTA 5 promotes violence and sex that degrades women teaching young boys that rape culture is okay to live with.

  4. Pornography is a multi billion industry in the US, where it has flourished under very little regulations. The rapid expansion of the industry has bought very disturbing aspects in our society. Many women are lured in the industry for quick money and fame, the porn they make has become more violent and aggressive as well as dehumanizing. Porn is to be blamed in the rise of sexual violence against women. Many young boys as well as adults watch porn as it is so easily accessible. Many men try to imitate the violent sexual acts of the porn. There was a rise in illegal video recording of sexual acts by men. Many young men as well women view porn as legitimate sexual acts. Pornography degrades the women’s body and it encourages violence against women by portraying women as a sexual object. It also hinders a safe sexual life among the young men.
Video games also play huge role in shaping the behavior in our society. Many video games have become more violent as well as dehumanizing. Games like GTA had garnished some media attention for its portrayal of women. The recent game GTA V has a scene where the character Trevor can pay the prostitutes to have sex. There are many strip clubs in the games, where you can do anything to the women characters as long as they are paid. There is also a sentiment of ownership of strippers and prostitutes because they are paid for sex. The game also let the player to kill or torture these characters. We saw a clip in the class of GTA V where a player can easily kill the prostitutes or any women character.
The market for pornography and video games is extremely saturated and they are incentivized to come up with more violent and dehumanizing porn or games in hope to sell these things. These materials sent a awful message to young boys as well as young men and it continues the problems related to rape culture.

  6. In the beginning of "Guilty Pleasure" Jackson Katz discusses the uncomfortable things men do to obtain sexual dominance and that most women are afraid to know the truth behind male culture and sexual fantasies because they are disturbing. These women also don’t dig deeper into understanding the culture because half of the time, these men are either their father, brother, son or husband renting these off putting pornos, having sex with prostitutes or paying strippers to dance on them. He also states that a lot of women carry the burden on their shoulders of having done uncomfortable things to men to accommodate the male in the relationship and their pornographic fantasy’s, and this goes back to women constantly always have to please men, the man always getting what the man wants and the women in the relationship will obey with the outlandish requests majority of the time because she doesn’t want to look like a “prude” in bed. Men’s sexual fantasies and desires start at an early age and ranges from what they are exposed too (which is to too much these days), porn’s easily accessed online, video games promote gang rape violence and vulgar language towards women and there’s a constant reminder in mainstream media how women are objects and nothing more. These boys and men become products of their environments and will then go on to think oppressing women is normal and healthy. I am not saying sex and having desires is bad, but the constant sexist and degrading forms of sexual violence that is promoted is negative towards how men should respect and look at women. Porn isn’t just about watching two people have sex anymore, it’s about watching angry and misogynistic acts and rage against women and stimulating these kinds fantasies are far from normal and the human erotic imagination. Boys and men will never know what a secure sex life is if they are constantly being exposed to these disturbing videos. In class we watched a video clip on GTA that had a feature on the video game that allowed you to have sex with prostitutes and then kill them- I am not sure what right minded person stops in the middle of the video game to have pretend sex with a pretend women and then kills her; it’s not normal it’s disgusting and it’s sad to know that this is allowed in a video game that so many teen boys play. The industry and its actions aren’t safe for women and these women are easily trapped into these industries’ because they have no other means of survival and they glamorize it the jobs, to sound more pleasing.

  7. The term “guilty pleasure” is often used to describe music, movies, video games, or other things that are not held in the highest regard in popular culture. However, this term does not take into consideration what partaking in said item is doing to the society around us. Even though Grand Theft Auto has it's few protestors, it is still one of the top-selling video games of all time; it’s outreach and influence is undeniable. People often dub the game as harmless by boiling it down to the statement “it’s just a game”, however, it’s “just a game” that turns women into objects and glorifies harming her after they have been used for sex. While you cannot directly blame this video game for violence against women, you can argue that it normalizes it in the minds of the young people, mostly young males, who are playing it.

This concept is also transferred over to pornography, specifically violent pornography. There is an increasing demand for pornography that features violence against women, but this is barely questioned because it is written off as a fetish; or a guilty pleasure. People that do look into the increasing violence against women in pornography generally have two viewpoints. The optimistic viewpoint revolves around the idea that the male viewers are desensitized to the violence. From the outside, this seems like it could be the positive perspective, but in order to become desensitized to something, you need to be exposed to it over and over again. The pessimistic view of this situation is the idea that male viewers like the violence. Both viewpoints are actually pretty negative; one, more or less, means that men are not affected by violence against women, while the other says they enjoy it.

When it comes to stripping, many women have started to feel empowered when it comes to this job positive. This is a great concept, in theory, however, the empowerment does not work on all levels. The men still feel entitled to a woman's body because they are paying for it, and women are, yet again, turned into objects for men to control as they please. Even with the empowerment behinds them, women cannot control the way men view them. They still consider them lesser people who do not deserve respect, and boil them down to objects that they use but “would never date”.

None of these “guilty pleasures”, Grand Theft Auto, violent pornography, and strippers, directly caused rape culture to occur, however, all three of them are completely correlated to it. These three things are written off as something that society doesn’t favor, but they are something society tolerates, and tolerating these things allows their influence to continue. This is particularly harmful in a world where violence against women is looked at as a woman’s problem, and the men are erased from the situation. They are symptoms of the same problem and they normalize rape culture for all genders.

  8. Katz scrutinizes the guilty pleasures for men that contribute to rape culture by discussing some of the things that men do to get pleasure such as watching aggressive porn or violence. The porn industry has thrived in the United States since there are so few regulations set in place for the industry. Because of this it has shed light on disturbing aspects of the type of society that we live in. More and more men are choosing to watch violent and aggressive porn where they are in complete control and dominant over a submissive female. This makes the female appear vulnerable and it makes men believe that they have the right to mistreat women, be violent towards them, and even rape them. It instills an unrealistic belief in the minds of men about how a woman should be and what they should expect from them. Men are led to believe that women are only there for their pleasure and it can lead to physical abuse towards women. Much of the rise of sexual violence against women can be blamed on the porn that men are watching. Many men try to reenact and imitate the pornos that they are watching ultimately degrading the woman’s body and encouraging men that it is okay to treat women like this. Katz also mentions the violence in video games like Grand Theft Auto. Grand Theft Auto is a video game that has violence, prostitution, and drug use. You play through the perspective of a male character where you can go around inflicting pain on others, paying prostitutes for sex, etc. This game promotes the degradation of women and it teaches player’s young and old that it is okay to do these things as long as you can pay for it. Both the porn and video game industries have flourished under rape culture. The more violent and dehumanizing it is the better it is sold throughout the markets.

  10. In the Chapter “Guilty Pleasure, Katz focuses on pornography and how it explicitly degrades women. It also explains that men feel a lot of desire when it comes to porn. Pornography involves a lot of stuff that desensitizes the idea of women. It always involves violence and aggression, which give men the pleasure they want/need. Also, it gives the wrong idea because is doesn’t educated the idea of consent or mutual agreement between man and women. It also gives the wrong message about women because some pornography makes it seem like its okay to abuse women. This is important because young boys can be given the wrong ideal later in their life.

Men always want to watch porn when it involves women, especially when they are objectified and used as a sexual product. The women are shown to be vulnerable, weak, and uncontrolled, which engages men to watch. A lot of men watch the ones with sexual aggression because it demonstrates empowerment and masculinity, which is what they believe in culturally as a man. Katz explains that when males walk into any place involving women as sexual object. They feel that they are entitled to do anything they want to them. This outcome can lead to violence, which includes rape or any categorized violence.

The game, Grand Theft Auto encouraged rape culture because it demonstrates acts of violence. The game lets players participate in sexual activity. The act is that you can pick up a prostitute on the side of the street, she then gives you a blowjob and when she’s finished. The game lets you run her over with the car, murdering her, and taking her money. Kat explains that it might not cause them to reenact the idea but it could make them feel like it’s normal to act in such a manner. The idea with violence against women have been too normalized that it’s hard to prevent situations like these.
